Introduction: Low to tall tree, generally 12–24 m. in height, with a straight not much branched trunk and a rather small crown, the final branches terete, grey, with scattered subprominent lenticels. Leaves of mature trees with blades narrowly elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, acutely acuminate, 6–19 cm. long, 2.3–7.6 cm. broad, coriaceous, nearly or quite glabrous on both surfaces except for well-spaced adpressed scales (appearing often as small pits under a hand lens). Panicles mostly terminal to the final branches, relatively large and fairly loose with very numerous small white flowers. Drupe narrowly ellipsoid to ellipsoid.

Distribution: Native to the Mediterranean region.
