Introduction: Dioecious shrub or small tree 1.5-5 m tall; bark gray to reddish brown; twigs puberulent. Leaf blades 1.7-4.0 x 0.8-1.7 cm, elliptic, ovate, or lanceolate, chartaceous, glabrous, the upper surface bright green, the lower surface pale, the apex bluntly acute to obtuse, the base attenuate, the margins slightly revolute, crenulate toward the distal portion; petioles 2-3 mm long, glabrous. Flowers in clusters of 5-9, in axillary racemes; axes 5-7 mm long; bracteoles numerous, green, imbricate; pedicels with a fimbriolate bractlet each. Calyx green, cup-shaped, parted into 4 - 8 usually lanceolate (although often irregular and sometimes bifid or trifid) lobes with sharp apices; stamens 4, green, usually alternate with the calyx lobes, the anthers 4-lobed; sometimes abortive stamens present; ovary green, the stigma 2-lobed and papillose. Drupe, 1-seeded, green, narrowly ellipsoid, 8-13 mm long.
