Introduction: A shrub or small to tall tree, 2·5–30 m. high, with smooth grey or brown bole and cream slash turning reddish–brown on exposure. Twigs characteristically straight; young shoots glabrous or minutely puberulous and glabrescent; bark smooth, sometimes with prominent lenticels. Leaves with petiole 3–7 mm. long; lamina 4·5–15 x 1·75–6 cm., glabrous, lanceolate, ovate, elliptic, oblong–elliptic, obovate or oblanceolate, the apex apiculate to acuminate, the base acute or cuspidate; main lateral nerves 4–7–paired; upper leaf surface glossy, with impressed midrib and slightly raised lateral nerves; lower surface mat, minutely pitted, with both midrib and lateral nerves raised, and pubescent acarodomatia in axils of most of the lateral nerves (very rarely acarodomatia absent); leaf margin slightly thickened, not revolute. Inflorescence glomerulate, comprising sessile axillary clusters of few to many flowers and their subtending bracts; flowers sweetly scented; bracts and calices densely appressed–pilose. Calyx 2·5–3·5 mm.
